What to Expect at Ace Doctors

Before getting an implant or IUD, you’ll need an initial consultation with one of our experienced GPs to:

1. Implanon (The Contraceptive Implant)

• A small, flexible rod inserted just under the skin of your upper arm

• Lasts up to 3 years

• Contains a low dose of progestogen, which prevents ovulation

• Quick and simple procedure under local anaesthetic

• Can be removed or replaced at any time

Good to know: Some people experience changes in their periods or spotting — your GP can discuss what to expect and how to manage it.

2. IUD (Intrauterine Device)

• A small, T-shaped device placed inside the uterus

• Two types: Copper IUD (non-hormonal) and Mirena/Kyleena (hormonal)

a) Copper IUD:

• Hormone-free

• Lasts up to 10 years

• May be suitable if you prefer a non-hormonal option

b) Mirena/Kyleena (Hormonal IUD):

• Slowly releases progestogen to prevent pregnancy

• Lasts up to 5 years

• Often reduces heavy or painful periods
