What is an Iron Infusion?
An iron infusion is a safe and effective treatment where iron is delivered directly into your bloodstream through a small drip in your arm. This allows your body to absorb the iron more quickly and efficiently than oral tablets — especially useful if tablets haven’t worked for you, or if you’re unable to take them due to side effects.
At Ace Doctors, we offer iron infusions right here at our Greensborough clinic, in a comfortable and caring environment.
Who Might Need an Iron Infusion?
Your GP may recommend an iron infusion if:
You have low iron levels or iron deficiency anaemia
You’ve tried iron tablets but experienced side effects like nausea or constipation
You have a condition that makes it hard for your body to absorb iron (e.g. coeliac disease, inflammatory bowel disease)
You’re pregnant and need a boost in your iron levels
You’re preparing for surgery or recovering from blood loss

What to Expect
Before booking an iron infusion, you’ll need an initial consultation with one of our GPs. They’ll discuss your symptoms, review your blood test results, and determine whether an iron infusion is the right treatment for you.
If it is, we’ll schedule the procedure at a time that suits you.
During the infusion:
You’ll be seated comfortably in a quiet room
A nurse or doctor will insert a small cannula into your arm
The iron will be administered slowly through a drip over 15–60 minutes
You’ll be monitored during and after the procedure to make sure everything goes smoothly
Most patients tolerate iron infusions well and are able to return to normal activities the same day.
After Your Infusion
It may take a few days to a week to start noticing an improvement in energy and overall wellbeing. We’ll schedule a follow-up blood test to see how your iron levels are responding and discuss whether further treatment is needed.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Iron infusions are generally safe and well tolerated, but as with any medical procedure, there’s a small risk of side effects. These may include:
Mild headache or nausea
Temporary changes in taste
Muscle aches or fatigue
Rarely, allergic reactions
In particular one of the rare complications of an iron infusion is something called iron staining or tattooing. This is where the iron medication leaks under the skin and causes a staining or discolouration of the skin. If this does occur laser treatment might help but sometimes it is permanent and cannot be resolved.
At Ace Doctors, our clinical team is fully trained to manage any concerns and will keep a close eye on you during the procedure.
At Ace Doctors, your health and wellbeing come first. If you’ve been feeling unusually tired, short of breath, or low in energy, it could be a sign of iron deficiency — a common but often overlooked condition. In some cases, an iron infusion may be the most effective way to restore your iron levels and help you feel more like yourself again.
